A Familiar Face

One of the aspects of working at OIM that I love is meeting different kinds of people. It’s a privilege to be invited into their lives and to learn more about them in their seasons of life. During my time at OIM, I’ve built and deepened my relationships with many. One person I’ve deepened my relationship with is someone whom we’ll call Bob. I initially knew Bob from volunteering at my church’s drop-in program in the downtown area, but it's at OIM that I’ve really gotten to know him.

Recently, I was walking along Bank Street back to the office when I happened to see Bob. When I called his name, he turned and greeted me with a warm welcome. As we walked, we chatted briefly about what he was doing in the area because he doesn’t ordinarily frequent it. He shared that he was going to meet with a friend just up from where I saw him. I asked how he was doing and how his day had been so far. While our conversation was brief, his familiar face made my walk back to OIM far more enjoyable, and I left with a smile.

I always enjoy seeing and conversing with Bob whenever I see him, whether on Monday nights, at OIM throughout the week, or at OIM’s special meals. I realize how much of a privilege and blessing it is to see and chat with him more than just once a week. But this kind of interaction happens with many others who frequent OIM, whether it occurs while our street friends are walking or as they grab a treat from a local coffee shop. But each time, it feels like old friends are catching up.
