Guests at a Feast

Many years ago I was at an OIM Thanksgiving meal for our street friends. Before we got into full swing warming food, decorating, and setting up tables, someone did a short devotional that prepared our hearts to be humble servants.

He spoke on Luke 14:12-14. I would encourage you to read these precious verses as they are very powerful. Verse 13 says, ‘when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.’

During that devotional years ago, we were reminded that it is not practical for us to invite 200 of our street friends into our homes. However, by inviting them to come into the OIM, or to Knox church for our special meals, we are inviting them to a feast just the same. When we meet them on the street, in their living rooms, we are inviting them to a humble feast of a sandwich, pastry, juice, and some kind words of encouragement.

In our modern context, our street friends are the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.

Just this week I read that same passage again and was reminded of that special meal and of how well this passage applies to what we are doing at OIM.

As Christians, we are followers of Jesus Christ. These words in Luke are the words of Jesus, spoken to us. We are so thankful to be able to serve Jesus and be obedient to His commands here at OIM.
