Mavis’ Story – Work Skills (Episode 7 of 9)

Following is Mavis’ story (not her real name), one of courage and determination in the face of overwhelming obstacles and challenges.

You can hear Mavis tell her story on Family Radio CHRI 99.1 FM, each week day just after station identification at 8 am and 5 pm.

Parts of her story are messy, and always real, as is the wonderful lady who will find a special place in your heart.

Here in our Christmas Story Episode 7 Mavis finds out that Innercity Arts can be more than an art program:

When staff found out I was looking for something to do, I was invited to be a part of the Work Skills program. I could learn things I needed to know to enter the work force.

At first, I was afraid because I was so sure I would do something wrong, and staff convinced me that I could do it. You know what? I could!

My first day I was doing COVID cleaning, emptying garbage, breaking down boxes, and helping staff with whatever they needed.

I’ve learned how to do hard work, how to do things efficiently, and the repetitive tasks are great for me because of my ADHD.

My people skills have gone up, my organizational skills have improved, and everybody treats me amazing.

It doesn’t take much to set a person on the right track – just a little encouragement, maybe just one chance to get up on your feet. This we do at Christmas and all year round.

Please give a gift and show your support.

Stay tuned for the next episode of Mavis’ story, coming soon.

Thanks so much for your prayers and support that allow us to continue to reach out to young people just like Mavis.

Merry Christmas!

~Ken – Executive Director
